#1617 Learning to enjoy wines in the Kingdom of Taste
Monday March 21st 2005

This is Robert Lawrence Balzer with The Word on Wine. A front page story in last Wednesday's Los Angeles Times FOOD section, journalist David Shaw wrote a stimulating story on "MATTERS OF TASTE...What's behind the buzz", inspired by a prize winning film at the recent Cannes Film Festival, called "Mondovino" loosely translated as the "world of wine."  I first met David Shaw when he was in his early twenties, just beginning to encounter the world of wine.  Both of us believe strongly in the "the world of wine" as a place for fun, plus nourishment, and intellectual stimulus by the creative winemakers in all the grape-growing regions of the world.  As he writes in the Times article, "Wine is one product on Earth that is both agriculture and high culture."  He doesn't recommend this film by  Director Jonathan Nossiter, 43, and concludes his commentary by suggesting it will appeal only to non-wine folks.  Another true apostle of really good wines is Anthony Dias Blue of Bon Appetit Magazine whose good taste and judgment concerning wines and foods guides that splendid magazine's fine commentaries in this field.  I am privileged to be among the journalists he has appointed to their "Tasting Panel."  Tomorrow I'll be reporting on their most recent NEW RELEASEs TASTING...sharing the highlights, to me, of that event.  This is Robert Lawrence Balzer with the Word on Wine.
